1 John 4:4 (CEV) says, “Children, you belong to God, and you have defeated these enemies. God’s Spirit is in you and is more powerful than the one who is in the world.”
As I read that scripture, I felt the Lord give me the following encouragement for His people. He says to you – “Don’t give up! Don’t give in! Give it all you’ve got! I’ve got you! And you’ve got everything you need for life & godliness through My Spirit!” How encouraging!
In this scripture, John is reassuring us as Christians that once we have accepted Jesus, we now belong to God. We are God’s and no one and nothing can snatch us out of His hand. John 10:28-29 reinforces this truth by saying, “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand.”
Jesus shed His blood for us and died on the cross thereby paying the full price for our rescue and security. He has rescued us from the power of sin, from the devil’s ownership, and from the consequences of death. As believers, because we belong to God, we are no long under the rule and reign of the devil. Neither are we under the control of sin, nor do we need to fear death. Death is only the doorway to spending eternal life with God. How reassuring is that?
Next John tells us that we have defeated these enemies. What enemies? What is he referring to? You must read verses 1 – 3 to get the context: “Dear friends, don’t believe everyone who claims to have the Spirit of God. Test them all to find out if they really do come from God. Many false prophets have already gone out into the world, 2 and you can know which ones come from God. His Spirit says that Jesus Christ had a truly human body. 3 But when someone doesn’t’ say this about Jesus, you know that person has a spirit that doesn’t come from God and is the enemy of Christ. You knew that this enemy was coming into the world and now is already here.
For me, John is saying, don’t be naïve; you have an enemy! This enemy has evil intentions for you. He is always at work trying to get you off track, sidetracked or totally shipwreck your faith. There are forces always at work trying to distract you, deceive you, and get you to give up on your faith. But don’t fear your enemy, because greater is the One who now resides in you.
Finally, John reminds the believer that the power of Christ lives within them and is far greater and more potent than the influences of this world or the devil. He is emphatically stating that the Holy Spirit is more powerful than your enemy. He encourages us to follow His lead and keep in step with Him. And as we keep listening to His guidance, its then that we will overcome the evil one and his plans, each and every time! (1 John 2:13; 1 John 5:4-5).
He is saying to each one of us, “Don’t fear the enemy or his plans, because the Holy Spirit who lives inside of you will enable you to overcome and be victorious in every way.”
So, trust Him! He is far more powerful! He has promised us that we are not alone in our struggles or temptations and we won’t fail if we obey Him.
Believe what is written in Galatians 5:16-18, “If you are guided by the Spirit, you won’t obey your selfish desires. 17 The Spirit and your desires are enemies of each other. They are always fighting each other and keeping you from doing what you feel you should. 18 But if you obey the Spirit, the Law of Moses has no control over you.”
So, don’t give up! Don’t give in! Give it all you’ve got! Remember He has got you! And you’ve got everything you need for life and godliness through His Spirit!
